Label TextGeorge N. Barnard American (1819-1902) The General "The Hero," 1864 Albumen print 98.32.112 On April 12, 1862 this locomotive was seized in a daring raid by Union raider James J. Andrews and his party. After a chase across the states of Tennessee and Georgia by another locomotive-running backwards-the General was captured and Andrews, along with seven of his raiders, were hanged by Confederate forces. The locomotive is now in the collection of the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in Kennesaw, Georgia. The zany chase became legend and was made into a silent movie by Buster Keaton in 1927. Edited By: DS Edited Date: 01/2006Exhibition History"Civil War Photographs from the David L.
