Label TextAdele Williams American, 1868–1952 Fishing Boats at Gloucester, ca. 1900s–1910s Watercolor, gouache, and graphite on paper Passages of opaque gouache add rich tones to this watercolor depicting a wharf in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Like other American Impressionists, Adele Williams spent many summers in the picturesque harbor towns of New England. After studying art in New York and Paris, she settled in her hometown of Richmond, Virginia. This painting, purchased by the Norfolk Society of Arts in 1917, is among a small group of early gifts that contributed to the founding of this Museum.
