DescriptionSilver medal, found in 1978 inventory.Label TextPeter L. Krider Co. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Washington Inauguration Centennial Medal, 1889 White metal Inscription on obverse: "THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF WASHINGTON'S INAUGURATION / 1789 - 1889" Inscription on reverse: "COMPLIMENTS OF BLACK, STARR, & FROST / NEW YORK" Anonymous Gift 0.1756 This medal, commemorating the 100th anniversary of George Washington's inauguration as president of the United States, was evidently distributed as a gift to customers of the New York silver manufacturers, Black, Starr, & Frost. The Washington statue and the building illustrated on the medal still stand at Wall and Nassau Streets in New York. The bronze statue, by the American sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward, was erected in 1883 in close proximity to the spot where Washington took the oath of office in April 1789. It shows Washington in command at the conclusion of the ceremonies. The Greek-revival style Subtreasury Building behind the statue stands on the site of Federal Hall, which served as the temporary capitol at that time. During the celebration of the centennial, President Benjamin Harrison's reviewing stand and speaker's platform stood on the steps of the Subtreasury Building.
