That coin, which was struck to raise money for a statue of Lafayette to be erected in Paris as a gift of the American people, has the distinction of being the first United States coin to bear the likeness of an American president. The now familiar Washington quarter did not appear until the bicentennial of Washington's birth in 1932.Exhibition History"First in the Hearts of His Countrymen: America Remembers George Washington 1732-1799," Chrysler Museum of Art, Nov. 23, 1999 - Summer 2001.
