DescriptionThis is a toned gelatin silver print. To make this photograph, Schneider placed his face on a sheet of photographic film. The heat and perspiration from his skin formed the impression on the film. The film was then printed and toned.Label TextGary Schneider American (b. East London, South Africa, 1954) Mask, 1999 Toned gelatin silver print Purchase, in memory of Alice R. and Sol B. Frank 2000.15 Gary Schneider’s Mask is from the artist’s Genetic Self-Portrait series. In 1996, he received an invitation to create a photographic response to the revolutionary Human Genome Project, an international research team, who mapped the sequences of all the genes in human DNA. Schneider responded by using various scientific and medical processes, such as x-rays, radiographs, photograms, and micrographs of specimens, to depict his entire body. Mask focuses on the artist’s face and head. ProvenanceThe artist, 1999; Eleanor Barefoot Gallery, New York; Chrysler Museum of Art Purchase, 2000.
