DescriptionThis is a watercolor painting. Large areas of the paper have been left bar, especially at the right. The left depicts a steep and rocky coast with a small building at the point of the cliff. Morris helped organize a retrospective exhibition of Richards’ work after his death, giving particular praise in the catalogue to the artist’s seascapes: His love for the sea was not of the physical order. He had no desire to overcome its force, but he could subdue it to his brush, and it was perhaps a sense of this which stimulated his passion. He felt his mastery and he loved its object.
