DescriptionThis is a watercolor and graphite painting. A rocky, mountainous coast fills most of the image; lower hills on the right, in the distance, with the sea in the foreground.Label TextRocky Coast (possibly Wales), ca. 1890s Watercolor and graphite on wove paper After exploring the dramatic coastal scenery of southwest England in 1879, the cliffs and beaches of the British Isles became one of William Trost Richards’ favorite subjects. He returned often during the following two decades, creating hundreds of drawings and watercolors of rocks and waves. Here we look down from the barren headlands onto an unusually calm sea, with the shoreline beyond fading into a foggy blur.
