DescriptionThis is an oil on panel of a seascape with a small corner of beach at the left. It appears very still, with very little surf. Large white/yellow/lavender clouds overhead.Label TextSeascape, ca. 1890s Watercolor on board Beach and Waves, ca. 1890s Oil on panel William Trost Richards used a variety of materials when working outdoors. While he made some of his plein-air paintings on thin pieces of wood panel, as with the smaller picture in this case, he painted others on commercially produced artist’s board, as seen with the larger work. Such lightweight and inexpensive materials were ideal for creating these studies and sketches—simple but often beautiful exercises that the artist never intended to exhibit or sell.
