DescriptionThis is a large-sized chromogenic print of a young girl in a turqoise skirt and a yellow t-shirt. She stands in a forest looking directly at the viewer.Label TextRineke Dijkstra Dutch (b. 1959) Nida, Lithuania (Brigita), 2000 Chromogenic print (photograph) "I photographed this girl (Brigita) in the summer of 2000 in the woods of Lithuania, where she was playing with her friends. A forest is a fairy-tale kind of place, connected with all kinds of stories and fantasies. The way the light plays with the leaves of the trees and shines through them is beautiful and magical." The Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra is best known for works like this one: large-scale color images of single standing figures—adolescents, soldiers, bullfighters, young mothers—who gaze directly at the viewer. The simplicity and even starkness of her compositions allow for no escape, urging us to engage with the personality placed before us. The gawky twelve-year-old here may appear defenseless as she moves into adolescence, yet she still retains the innocence and serenity of childhood. Museum purchase in memory of Alice R. and Sol B.
