Label TextThomas Woodall English (1849-1926) George Woodall English (1850-1925) Thomas Webb & Son Stourbridge, England Vase in the Chinese Taste, ca. 1885-90 Blown cased glass, cameo-carved Gift of the Mowbray Arch Society 2001.35 This vase represents a wide variety of decorative elements seen in Chinese porcelain produced and collected by Chinese Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799). The floral ornament and many of the borders seem to have been derived from a color plate that appeared in Examples of Chinese Ornament, a book published by the English architect and designer Owen Jones in 1867. Thomas Woodall's personal sketchbook contains drawings of three additional Chinese borders that were incorporated into the design of this vase.
