DescriptionThe vase is in a Chinese shape with a high shouldered ovoid body, broad neck, flaring rim, and slightly domed foot. The glass is blown in two layers with opaque white on a brown or raisin-colored ground. The opaque white layer is acid-etched and cameo carved in relief. A frieze depicting three horses mounted with jockeys warps around approximately two-thirds of the vase. The rim and foot have stylized classical leaf borders that mirror each other (the leaves run in opposite directions). On the lower portion of the vase is repeating pattern consisting of twelve stylized olive (?) branches (each with five leaves and two fruits) that rise from a narrow band at the top of the domed foot; small quatrefoil flowers alternate between the tips of these branches. On the neck, located above the central horse and rider is an asymmetrical flowering branch (in the Japonesque manner); this branch begins at the lower edge of the rim border and the tips of its outermost leaves extend onto the shoulder.
