Photographer Henry Warren traveled from the Boston suburb of Waltham, Mass., to Washington, D.C., to attend President Lincoln’s second inauguration in 1865. The ceremony took place on the steps of the U.S. Capitol on March 4, and Warren returned to the East Lawn two days later to create this image. In the foreground of this photo is a marble seated statue of George Washington by American sculptor Horatio Greenough (1805−1852). Look for Warren’s portrait of President Lincoln, taken on the same day as this photograph, hanging in the next bay of this exhibition.
