DescriptionThis is a gelatin silver print.Label TextO. Winston Link American (1914-2001) Mr. And Mrs. Benjamin Franklin Pope Watch the Last Steam Powered Passenger Train Pass Their Home, Max Meadows, Virginia, 1957 Gelatin-silver print On loan with the intent to give from David and Susan Goode L2004.11.30 Between 1955 and 1960, O. Winston Link made hundreds of negatives of steam locomotives on the Norfolk and Western Railway in Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. The Norfolk and Western was the last railroad in America to employ the steam locomotive and Link wanted to document these wonderful manmade workhorses before they completely vanished from the American landscape. Many of Link's images were made at night using huge arrays of flash bulbs creating eerie surrealistic effects. The Popes lived in a substantial Victorian home just west of Max Meadows. Link had spotted the porch (later demolished) with its fancy turned spindles and good view of the tracks as a perfect foreground for a photograph. On December 31, 1957, Mr. and Mrs. Pope stood close together on the porch to watch the final passage of a steam powered passenger train in front of their home.
