Lerner with thanks to the Business Exhibition Counsel of the Chrysler Museum of Art 2005.8.17 Working as a staff photographer for Look magazine from 1951 to 1971, Lerner traveled to fifty countries on five continents and to each of America's fifty states. His photojournalist work included sports greats, political giants, talented celebrities, peace rallies, poverty-stricken and mentally challenged individuals and families, street scenes from around the world, and glamour. Historically, the photographers at Look have been overshadowed by its primary competitor magazine, Life. Because the photographers at Look worked as a team with writers, the culture of the magazine did not encourage individuals to be stars. This photograph was made as part of a LOOK essay celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Salvation Army. The location was near one of their missions on the south side of Chicago. The thrust of the essay was to illustrate some of their many outstanding programs for the poor and homeless.
