DescriptionThe David L. Hack Civil War Photography Collection. This is a photograph of a large group of men in the woods. They are all soldiers in uniform and are gathered around a tree, where there stands one central man whom the rest are angled out from. Many of the men have on hats and are holding their swords at their sides. Behind them are an American flag and a tent. This is from _Gardner's Photographic Sketchbook of the War_ (Hack Collection No. 2].

Hack and by exchange Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. 98.32.150 Exactly 150 years ago, between May 31 and June 12, 1864, the forces of Generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant fought at Cold Harbor, Virginia, less than 100 miles from here near Richmond. More than 15,000 Americans were killed or wounded in this violent confrontation. As photographic technology became more portable, artists followed these armies to make portraits and to record the aftermath of major battles.
