Label TextAlexander Gardner American, 1821−1882 Abraham Lincoln, 1863, printed ca. 1890 Platinum print (photograph) Lincoln sat for this portrait and four others in Alexander Gardner’s studio on November 8, 1863. The following week the president traveled to Pennsylvania to dedicate a new cemetery for the Union soldiers killed in the Battle of Gettysburg. Gardner followed and was in the audience with his camera when Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. Gift of David L. Hack and Museum purchase, with funds from Walter P.
