Hartranft and His Staff, Old Arsenal Prison, 1865 Albumen print (photograph) On July 5, 1865, the trial of Lincoln’s assassins ended and plans began for their execution by hanging. General John Frederick Hartranft (1830−1889), seated in the center of this group, oversaw the confinement of the prisoners and the execution proceedings. Behind him, looking directly at the camera, is Dr. George Loring Porter (1838−1919), the young surgeon responsible for the prisoners’ health. Notice the ribbon pinned to Porter’s left arm and the black rosette on the left sleeve of Colonel Levi A. Dodd (1833−1901), seated below him. Both are mourning ribbons worn in memory of Lincoln.
