Traveling widely around the country, he photographed the construction of industrial sites, new Kolkhozes (large- scale collective farms), and personalities like the writers Maxim Gorky and Vladimir Mayakovsky. This photograph comes from a series of important images that he made of miners in the Donbass Region of the Ukraine. During the war with Finland (1939-1940) he was a war correspondent with the troops on the Karelian front. In September of 1941 he was drafted to fight in the Second World War. He continued to photograph and in July of 1943 was transferred to become the army correspondent for the military publication Slovo Boitsa. After his demobilization in 1953 he worked for the numerous photo agencies and photo magazines.
