Label TextAlexander Gardner American, 1821−1882 Gardner’s Photographic Sketch Book of the War (cover), 1866 Published by Philp & Solomons, Washington, D.C. Embossed and gilded cardboard After the Civil War ended, Alexander Gardner selected 100 of the best war photos produced by his studio and published them in this handsome album. Arranged chronologically, the book pioneered the art of photographic storytelling, tracing the war from early battles like Bull Run in 1861 to the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865. Gardner often mentioned Abraham Lincoln in his captions, but included no studio portraits of the president or other leaders, only landscapes. Some of the camp and battlefield pictures found in this exhibition were originally distributed in this album. Museum purchase and partial gift of Carol L. Kaufman and Stephen C.
