During her studies, Surgent quickly focused on mastering and refreshing the ancient glassmaking technique of cameo-engraving. Her compositions on flat glass panels are very urban and contemporary, and they appear more like photographs from afar. Drawing upon her own travel memories, Surgent explores the power of place in shaping people's perception of themselves. In Don't Wait For Me, passengers wait anonymously in the vast, fan-shaped glass atrium of the Seattle-Tacoma airport. The space recalls in spirit the great urban railroad terminals of the past century, and yet addresses the mixed emotions of modern travel. Feeling excited for the travel to come and yet lonely for the life left behind, Surgent here suggests that those memories can be as misty as the gray weather looming in the mountains outside.
