DescriptionAluminum sculpture of a greyhound. Standing in an alert pose, head turned back to left. Mounted on a plaque.Label TextAnna Hyatt Huntington American, 1876–1973 Speedy, 1935 Aluminum Lowered ears and a wagging tongue suggest the playful character of Speedy, sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington’s pet greyhound. Nonetheless, giant thighs could launch the dog into a race at any moment, and his rippling muscles cause the sculpture’s aluminum surface to shimmer. Encouraged by her father, a Harvard science professor, Huntington became an expert in animal anatomy. As she later explained, “I just worked at them and made them as natural as possible.” Like her contemporary William Hunt Diederich, creator of the fire screen nearby, horses and dogs were her favorite subjects. Huntington’s massive Torch Bearers, designed in 1953, greeted you outside the Museum’s main entrance. Gift of Mrs. Archer M.
