As designer and engraver to the Menus-Plaisirs-the part of the king's staff responsible for official state ceremonies-he became the great chronicler of royal events during the reign of Louis XV. Louis XV's son-Louis, Dauphin of France (1729-1765)-married María Teresa Rafaela of Spain in 1745. The marriage lasted only seventeen months-until July 1746, when she died in childbirth. Within a year he married again, this time to Marie-Josephe of Saxony. As seen in Cochin's print, the Dauphin's second marriage was celebrated at Versailles with a lavish gambling party presided over by Louis XV himself. This print is a rare proof impression, made before the inscription was added at the lower edge.
