O'Sullivan American, ca. 1840–1882 Shoshone Falls, Snake River, Idaho from Wheeler Survey West of the 100th Meridian, 1874 Albumen print (photograph) After learning his trade while working in Mathew Brady's New York studio, Timothy O'Sullivan became one of the most prolific photographers of the Civil War. Later, he worked as a photographer on geological and mapping expeditions in the American West and Panama. O'Sullivan made more photographs of Shoshone Falls than of any other single subject, visiting in 1868 and 1874. Thomas Moran based his watercolor of a similar view of the falls on O’Sullivan’s photographs, having not yet visited the site himself. Purchase, Horace W. Goldsmith Fund 90.63
