DescriptionThe framed work on paper depicts a circular petri-dish form with small people.Label TextMichal Rovner Israeli (b. 1957) Culture #4, 2003 Pure pigment on archival paper Gift of Renée and Paul Mansheim 2011.13.8 In Culture #4, a Petri dish displays tiny human figures resembling microorganisms. Based on the artist’s video sculptures and installations, this work captures one split second of the specimens’ movement. The pairing and splitting of bodies evoke transnationalism and diaspora, or the migration or scattering of residents away from their homeland. Israeli-born artist Michal Rovner is internationally acclaimed for her unique works that comment on national and cultural borders, identities, and communities. Rovner’s work speaks to her own Jewish heritage and the larger implications of cultural conflict in today’s global society.ProvenanceArtist; Pace Gallery; Paul and Renee Mansheim; gift to Chrysler Museum of ArtExhibition History"Remix Redux: A Fresh Mix For Our Modern And Contemporary Galleries," Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia, August 15 - December 30, 2012.
