Label TextTorso New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, Reigns of Amenhotep II-Thutmose IV, 1427-1390 B.C.E. Diabase Gift of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. 71.2252 This sculpture was originally part of a full-length figure depicting an Egyptian nobleman-a high priest, perhaps, or one of the king's officials. The figure would probably have been shown kneeling or seated, his head crowned with a wide wig. The three gold-disk strands of the figure's shebyu collar-a gift from the king-attest to his elevated status, as do his armlets. The wavy lines on his stomach are rolls of fat, another sign of his wealth and social standing. The sculpture would have been placed in the nobleman's tomb or, with the king's assent, in the first court of a temple, a sacred venue otherwise reserved only for gods and kings.
