DescriptionLithograph.Label TextHenri de Toulouse-Lautrec French, 1864-1901 Au Moulin Rouge, L'Union Franco-Russe, 1894 Lithograph on paper In the autumn of 1893 the Moulin Rouge held a gala celebration to mark the success of the Franco-Russian Alliance, signed in August 1892. Toulouse-Lautrec published this image of an unequal couple dancing at the event in L'Escarmouche, an avant-garde magazine. The fascination with all things Russian that year in Paris echoed the burst of interest in all things Japanese a few years prior. The figures resemvle the bold shapes of the Ukiyo-e prints Toulouse-Lautrec so admired, while his crachis, or spraying technique, is a nod to bikashi, the virtuoso gradations that connoisseurs prized in Japanese woodblock prints.
