SpA 2017.9 Since 1964, the tire company Pirelli has become famous for its photographic calendars featuring provocative nude or scantily clad models. Like any calendar, these are designed to keep time, but in recent years the calendars have become historically noteworthy themselves. For the 2016 calendar (opposite side of case) the company commissioned Annie Leibovitz, one of only a few female photographers in its history. She abandoned erotic imagery and instead featured a diverse group of accomplished women artists, philanthropists, and writers. For the 2017 calendar, Pirelli returned to a male photographer, Peter Lindbergh, but he too abandoned pin-up imagery for photographs that, in his words, “remind everyone, that there is a different beauty, more real and truthful and not manipulated by commercial or any other interests, a beauty which speaks about individuality.”
