Label TextBrian Bress American, b. 1975 WOWMOM, 2015 High-definition, synchronized three-channel video (color), three high-definition monitors and players, wall mounts, framed, 18 min., 18, sec., loop In WOWMOM, a mountainous landscape falls away as figures cut it apart from behind. The actions calls attention to the “fourth wall”—the imaginary plane that separates viewers from a performance or, in this case, the landscape that initially appears as the surface of the screens. The Muppet-like figures challenge our assumptions about televised imagery, especially the depictions of figures and landscapes. According to Bress, his work plays “around with the illusion of putting a figure inside a flat glowing box.” Museum purchase and partial gift of the artist and Cherry and Martin, Los Angeles 2017.12ProvenanceBrian Bress; Chrysler Museum of Art, 2017Exhibition History"In the Box: Brian Bress: "Man with a Cigarette" and "WOW MOM"," Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA, September 15, 2016 - May 7, 2017.
