Label TextSusan Worsham American, born 1969 Diospyros virginiana (Virginia sugar-plum), 2014 Archival pigment print (photograph) Susan Worsham created these two photographs (see the Marine portrait, center of the room) as part of a series that explores contemporary Southern identity. Over the past nine years, the artist let curiosity and a sense of nostalgia guide her down quiet roads to warmly lit places and chance encounters with strangers. The resulting environmental portraits, landscapes, and still lifes capture fleeting moments shared between the artist, the Southern landscape, and the people she meets along the way. Here, the evening glow illuminates a persimmon plant whose bittersweet fruits evoke the South’s complicated past. Museum purchase, in memory of Alice R. and Sol B.
