DescriptionPhotograph from a volume designed to illustrate biblical sites, often corresponding to specific biblical passages.Label TextJames Robertson English, 1813–1881 Felice Beato English, b. Italy 1832–1909 Robertson & Beato 1853–1867 Jérusalem, la façade de l'église du St Sépulcre, ca. 1856 Albumen print (photograph) From Jerusalem Album Photographique, Constantinople, Köhler & Weiss, Libraires Editeurs, ca. 1864 Photographers James Roberston and Felice Beato formed a partnership in 1853 and opened a studio in Constantinople, from which they made numerous trips throughout Palestine, Egypt, and Syria. In 1864, they published a volume of photographs they had made in and around Jerusalem. When they arrived in the Holy Land, they discovered it to be a desolated outpost of the Ottoman Empire. But by identifying specific sites from the Bible and captioning their photographs with passages of scripture, their album helped bring biblical history to life for viewers in the West.
