DescriptionThe work is a painted image of a marketplace in Nigeria. Several black figures engage in commerce, with a man and woman in the center talking with a trader over a bolt of cloth. A woman in the left edge and a woman on the right edge of the scene each carries a baby on her back, though the figure on the left also carries wares on her head. A chicken walks past and several other figures in the background are also conducting business.Label TextJacob Lawrence American, 1917–2000 Market Scene, 1966 Tempera and gouache on paper Chrysler Museum of Art, Museum purchase 2018.22ProvenanceThe artist; sold via his gallery, Terry Dintenfass Gallery in New York, to a private collector in Massachusetts in 1966; purchased by the Chrysler Museum of Art in 2018 from the private collector through the artist's gallery.Exhibition History"Black Orpheus: Jacob Lawrence and the Mbari Club,” Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA, October 7, 2022 - January 8, 2023; New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans, LA, February 10 - May 7, 2023; Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, OH, June 3 - September 3, 2023.
