DescriptionDepicts North Kivu, a province on the eastern edge of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was made with Kodak Aerochrome, a discontinued infrared film once used by the U.S. Air Forrce for aerial military reconnaissance. The film registers the invisible spectrum of infrared light and renders the green landscape in vivid and surreal hues of lavendar, crimson, and hot pink.Label TextRichard Mosse Irish, born 1980 Here Come the Warm Jets, North Kivu, Eastern Congo, 2012 Digital chromogenic print (photograph) This photograph’s dreamy palette of teals, pinks, and violets seems far removed from the landscape it depicts: the war-torn border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Militant groups have been involved in violent clashes there since the 1990s. Photographer Richard Mosse creates these otherworldly colors by using infrared film that was developed to detect camouflage. Whereas traditional documentary photographs tend to simplify conflicts, Mosse’s surrealistic images and colors draw attention to the unfathomable nightmares of war.
