DescriptionLithograph; an illustration from "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Sea and Japan" by M.C. Perry, 1856. From nature by W.T. Litho. of Sarony and Co., New York.Label TextW. T. Lithograph of Sarony and Co. American, New York After William Heine German, 1827-1885 The Delivery of the American Presents at Yokuhama, 1856 Published in The Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan by Admiral Matthew Calbraith Petty Lithograph (print) The gifts Americans brought to the Emperor of Japan in 1854 included a functioning telegraph system and small-scale train with a track-- gifts clearly intended to foster trade. The Americans were not impressed by the gifts the Japanese gave them, many of which were tailored to the interests of Perry and his staff. The selection included prints, no doubt the kinds of Ukiyo-e that later came to France. Although they may have inspired artists there, they were viewed by the U.S. delegation as proof of Japanese degeneracy, akin to their disapproval that Japanese of both sexes customarily bathed together.
