DescriptionOne part of a triptych print. Shows a woman leading a black water buffalo along the sand before high waves. The center print has the same shade of green in the trees as the left one, but the right hand one has a very different shade.

Label TextUtagawa Hiroshige Japanese, 1797-1858 Triptych of Travelers through a Lanscape Woodblock prints on paper Utagawa Hiroshige was master of the landscape Ukiyo-e woodblock print on paper. He created a number of series, often featuring snow-capped Mt. Fuji, the tallest peak in Japan. The widely visible mountain still has totemic significance today and is a symbol of Japan. This triptych expands on one of those scenes from the beach at Hoda and shows a couple travelling along the coast. Triptychs (a Greek world for "three leaves") were a popular way of making affordable larger pictures using existing production techniques. Gift of James C.
