Label TextStatuette of Amun Third Intermediate Period, Dynasty 21-22, 1069-715 B.C.E. Bronze Gift of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. 71.2217.19 Associated with the sun god Re, Amun was the protector of royalty and in time became the premier deity in the Egyptian religion. Though this striding figure of Amun has lost its towering feathered crown, its high level of finish-consider the figure's finely worked clothes and jewels-suggests that the original owner was a person of means. It was likely placed in a temple or chapel, possibly in a main city such as Thebes or Memphis, where the cult of Amun was especially strong.
