DescriptionThis is an oil on loose canvas of two seascapes. The rectangular canvas has two separate seascapes on opposite ends of the canvas.Label TextTwo Rocky Seascapes (probably Cornwall), ca. 1890s Oil on canvas The unstretched canvas in the case in the middle of this room gives us an unusual glimpse of William Trost Richards’ working process. It features two similar coastal views on a single canvas, rotated for maximum use of the materials. These may be large preparatory works, or, given their degree of finish, the artist may have planned to cut the canvas and sell them separately. Since it remained uncut in his studio at the time of his death, we can guess that he painted it in the final years of his career.
