DescriptionThis is an etching of the ruins of a colosseum.Label TextGiovanni Battista Piranesi Italian (1720-1778) Vedute di Roma: The Colosseum, ca. 1757 Etching Gift of Mark A. Clark in honor of the marriage of Catherine and John Wass 97.36.2 Completed by the Emperor Domitian in AD 82, the Colosseum was celebrated in late antiquity as the eighth Wonder of the World and since then has served as an eternal symbol of Rome. Piranesi's dramatic evocation presents the amphitheater as a grand, cavernous ruin, a majestic emblem of the vanished grandeur of Imperial Rome.
