Rather than simply illustrating the flock, Park created a fanciful scene punctuated with frolicking ewes, dueling rams, young people courting, and a bucolic townscape along the Susquehanna River. As a young man, Park traveled widely and served in the Union army during the Civil War but later spent nearly his entire career working within this same region in which he was born.
