Label TextAmerican Probably New England Area Six-Inch Plate, ca. 1832 Pressed lead-formula glass Gift of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. 71.3854 This pressed glass dessert plate probably dates from about the time of the centennial of Washington's birth. By adding the inscription "GEORGE WASHINGTON" to a crudely modeled classical bust at the center, the mold maker converted a plate with standard classical revival decoration into a "Washington" object - an American glassmaker's answer to English transfer-printed ceramics with Washington subject matter.Exhibition History"First in the Hearts of His Countrymen: America Remembers George Washington 1732-1799," Chrysler Museum of Art, Nov. 23, 1999 - Summer 2001.
