By placing his darkest and strongest brushstrokes at the edges of this canvas, Jules Olitski asks us to think about the place where his painting stops and our own space begins—the dividing line between the world of art and everyday life. The painting exudes an inner light that appears to come not so much from an external source, but from within the canvas itself. Because we tend to associate light with life, the veil of tinted paint becomes a changeable, living form, rather than sitting on the wall as an inert and static work of art.
