DescriptionThis is a composite of six gelatin silver prints.Label TextRay K. Metzker American (1931-2014) City Drillers I, 1968 Composite of six gelatin silver prints, 1983 Purchase, Horace W. Goldsmith Fund 87.400 Ray Metzker's inventive photography is rooted in his early training in the Bauhaus philosophy as taught by Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind at the Chicago Institute of Design. His work, a series of formal visual experiments (including Composites, Sand Creatures, Pictus Interruptus, City Whispers, and Landscapes), poses and seeks to resolve questions about the medium's descriptive potential. Though frequently abstract in appearance, Metzker's images reveal, on closer inspection, an acute, carefully defined essence of a place. This composite, entitled City Drillers I, was printed and assembled by Metzker in 1983 from negatives he made in 1968.
