Label TextJack Brusca American, 1939–1993 Three, 1972 Acrylic on canvas The number three is not usually interesting and exciting. However, artist Jack Brusca used a combination of color and shadow to make the number visually stimulating. Early in his career, the artist gave letters, numbers, and shapes a three-dimensional quality, producing works that appeared to be sculptures captured in a painting. Using a style that referenced photorealism and surrealism, Brusca painted objects in bright colors with muted tones in the background, creating the sense that there was an offframe light producing the deep shadow. The artist learned to blend colors and create dimensional illusions from his work as a set designer in New York ballet companies. Gift of Stanley Diamond 79.280
