Label TextDanny Lyon American, b. 1942 Leesburg, Georgia, 1963. Arrested for Demonstrating in Americus, Teenage Girls are Kept in a Stockade in the Countryside, August 1963 Gelatin silver print (photograph), printed 1999 Danny Lyon, a staff photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, aimed his camera through the barred window of a pen in rural Georgia to photograph a group of teenage girls who had been arrested for protesting and detained without charges for days. One prisoner, Henrietta Fuller, later described this inhuman treatment in an affidavit: I am 13 years old and was in Leesburg stockade from August 31 to September 8. There were 32 kids in there with me. There were no beds, no mattresses, no blankets, pillows, no sheets. The floor was cold… There was a shower but it wasn’t clean enough for you to bathe in… At night the mosquitos and roaches were at us. Museum purchase, in memory of Alice R. and Sol B.
