Crowds Wait Along the Funeral Route of the Girls Murdered in the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing, September 18, 1963 Gelatin silver print (photograph), printed 1999 Thousands lined the streets of Birmingham, Alabama to pay their respects to Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley, all age 14, and Denise McNair, age 11. The four young black girls died when the Ku Klux Klan bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church at 10:22 a.m. on Sunday, September 15, 1963. The church had been a frequent meeting point for activists in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and other groups within the Civil Rights Movement.
