DescriptionThis is a very detailed pencil and watercolor drawing of a thatched building with glimpses of other similar buildings, trees and undergrowth. The thatched roof building is partially finished in watercolor; the trees and bushes are rendered in graphite only.Label TextWilliam Trost Richards American, 1833–1905 Cottage with Thatch Roof, ca. 1880s–90s Watercolor and graphite on paper This watercolor appears as if the artist has paused halfway through its creation, allowing us insight into his working method. The detailed pencil drawing structures the composition, while layers of paint build up the color, light, and texture of the scene. William Trost Richards was also well regarded for his oil paintings, an example of which is on view in the Chrysler’s American galleries.
