DescriptionThis is an oil on panel painting of a seascape. Rocks are at the left edge; the sea is rough. In the foreground, across the bottom edge a bright green patch of grass grows.Label TextConanicut, Rhode Island, ca. 1890s Oil on panel Between 1881 and 1882, William Trost Richards and his wife, Anna, collaborated on the design and building of a new house on Conanicut, just across the harbor from the town of Newport, Rhode Island. They named it Graycliff in honor of its hillside site overlooking the rocks and water. Though Richards continued to travel and paint around the world, few sites rivaled the beauty of his front yard facing the Narragansett Bay.
