Isaacs 2001.31.24 Since ancient times, the monuments of the Great Sphinx and the pyramids have served as the national symbols of Egypt. Believed to be some 4,500 years old, the Sphinx is carved from a single ridge of stone and is 240 feet long and 66 feet high. It was carved from limestone bedrock which formed fifty million years ago when sea waters covered northeast Africa. The stone quarried from around the Sphinx was used in the construction of the adjacent pyramids and temples at Giza.
