Label TextLouis de Clercq French, 1836–1901 Kalaat-el-Markab, Partial View of the West Wall, 1859 Albumenized salted paper print (photograph) from a waxed paper negative In 1859, Louis de Clercq set out to produce a documentary survey of the medieval castles left by Crusaders in modern-day Syria. Few travelers from Western Europe had ever visited the enormous monuments or seen them represented in photographs—then a relatively new medium. Stories of the Crusaders adventures in the Holy Land were, however, legendary. Thus when De Clercq exhibited his multivolume collection at the fourth exhibition of the French Society of Photography in 1861, some saw his architectural records as exciting illustrations of their favorite tales.
