Harrell after he had inspected his engine in the roundhouse at Shaffers Crossing, prior to taking a train to Bluefield, West Virginia. At the height of steam operations, the huge Shaffers Crossing facilities could wash, lubricate, top up the tenders with coal and water, and clean the fires of 140 locomotives a day.
