DescriptionThis is a gelatin silver print.Label TextJ. W. DALHOUSE CLEANING THE HEADLIGHT OF CLASS K2A LOCOMOTIVE 127, SHAFFERS CROSSING ROUNDHOUSE Roanoke, Virginia, 1955 L2004.11.8 After his first photographs at Waynesboro, Virginia, Winston Link started working at the N&W's Shaffers Crossing locomotive servicing area. The roundhouse had 40 stalls, and at the high point of steam power, the crews at Shaffers Crossing could clean the fires, inspect, coal, sand, water and turn 140 engines every 24 hours. Locomotive 127 was used on Trains 1 and 2, and appeared frequently in Link's photographs made on the N&W's Shenandoah Division. J. W. Dalhouse's son, Warner, recalled his father saying that Link asked him to pose for a couple of photographs. Thinking that it would take only a few minutes, he agreed. Link made three portraits of Mr. Dalhouse, this wide angle view showing several engines, a midshot of the front of the locomotive and a close-up. The few minutes turned into two hours. The results were the creation of three beautiful photographs-and one very annoyed shop foreman.
